A road to glory is a common challenge, popular in the Fifa community. The general basis of this challenge is simple. A football team that lacks both skill and large funds is chosen for a career mode manager save, and you must bring them to greatness with tactical know-how, shrewd business skills, and talent development. This challenge is very open-ended, and different rules can be put in place to increase/decrease the difficulty of the challenge (for example, you can only simulate the season). Let’s begin by starting a road to glory. To start a road to glory, simply purchase Fifa 21 for your console, and select the career mode option. Choosing the team you’ll use is a bit more complicated. There are many aspects to be considered in choosing a team, and there is no right or wrong team to select. However, it is this writer’s opinion that the best way to go is choosing a team from the bottom-most divisions of the top soccer-playing nations in the world (league two in England, 3. LIGA in Germany, etc). This allows you to start off with a small team and get the full enjoyment of a Road To Glory, but simultaneously provides a challenge when you build your team to be stronger. Spain and France offer 2 tiers in total, Germany offers 3 tiers in total, and England offers 4 tiers in total. Therefore, the longest RTGs can be formed in England and Germany.
Now that you have selected a club and started your Road To Glory, it’s time to take a look at our squad. You will be able to see all your players, along with their rating, in the squad hub. Using this, you can make a decision on your transfer and youth development ideology. Look for the players with high ratings compared to the rest of your squad, the players who are young compared to the rest of your squad, and preferably, the players who are a mix of both. Using these criteria, you can make the best possible squad for your team, and start things as smoothly as possible.
Now we can move on to setting up your squad. This is the most important part of your Road To Glory and will determine how fast you grow. The best way to go about building your squad is to purchase low-rated wonderkids, however, this may not be ideal for lower league squads with low budgets. Another method is to train your original squad, with the hopes they will develop quickly, but this approach is also flawed, as most of your players will not have high potential (the potential to grow higher rated). So what should you do to set up your squad? The first crucial step is to take part in the pre-season tournament (a mini-tournament you can choose to participate in at the start of the season). Winning one will give you a financial reward, and make your RTG a whole lot easier! Now using the funds you have, you should set up your youth academy. A youth academy is a function you can use to scout for players in a certain region, and will provide you with computer-generated youngsters with high potential. Set aside half of your funds for this function, and hire a scout within your budget (keeping in mind that you’ll also have to use some funds to send them on their scouting trip). Use the rest of your budget for crucial signings and contract negotiations (renewing the contracts of players who will leave at the end of the season). Lastly, be sure to check the free agents for a potential superstar signing! You’d be surprised how high rated some of these guys get, especially in comparison to players in the lower leagues.
All of the above showed you how to set a strong foundation for your club in the first season. But what should you do next? Now, this is generally up to you, based on what your squad is looking like right now, but here are some general tips. Firstly, you should keep improving your youth academy scouts, and try to increase them to their maximum star level. Focus on promoting youth players instead of buying players of a similar skill level whenever you can. They cost way less in both signing fees AND wages. Next, you can use the pre-contract signing function to do a major part of your transfer business in January. The pre-contract function allows you to sign players who have 6 months or less left on their contract whilst bypassing the transfer fee that needs to be paid to the club they play for. These players will join your team at the start of the new season, practically for free! Once you are financially stable, you can go for normal transfers for higher-priced players, but until then pre-contract signings are the way to go! Finally, try selling older players and loaning out younger players who you don’t need. Not only will this provide you with funds you can better use elsewhere, but it will also help you balance the books better, meaning you can meet the financial objectives set by the board. Meeting objectives like these can sometimes be the difference between keeping or losing your job, especially if a season doesn’t go to plan.
