5 Average players who scored loads of goals vs big clubs
By Jim James
There is always one player that most don’t really fear facing, but he is a curse for your club. I was planning on doing this, but I never knew how, however, when I was scrolling around on Transfermarkt this morning, I found the “feared by club” tab, and I knew that now, we could do it. So now, I introduce you to 5 average players who scored loads of goals vs big clubs.
#5: Dodi Lukebakio – 5 goals vs Bayern
Most of these goals came from the hat-trick vs Bayern in November 2018 in a 3-3 draw, but he also scored once vs Bayern in his Hertha Berlin debut in 2019, but I can’t find the 5th goal unfortunately.
#4: Christian Benteke – 7 goals vs Liverpool, 7 goals vs Chelsea, & 5 goals vs Arsenal
We all know that Christian Benteke was a good player, but has been no more than a ghost since arriving at Crystal Palace, but he does fancy a game vs his former employers, evidently. He has scored 2 braces vs The Reds, one in the 12/13 season in a 3-1 victory, and one in 16/17 scoring both of the goals in a 2-1 victory at Anfield. He also scored the decisive goal at Villa Park in a 2015 FA Cup clash in a 2-1 semi finals victory. Most of his goals vs Chelsea & Arsenal were unimportant, except for a brace with Aston Villa vs Arsenal in a 3-1 victory.
#3: Darren Bent – 8 goals vs Arsenal, 7 goals vs Man City, 5 goals vs Liverpool, & 5 goals vs Chelsea
When it comes to great premier league strikers, Darren Bent isn’t really the first name on your mind, however, he was a consistent player, a Shane Long or Danny Ings sort. He has taken a few points away from Arsenal, however, scoring both goals in a 2-1 victory with Aston Villa in 10/11, scoring the only goal for Sunderland in a 1-0 victory in 09/10, and scoring one of Spurs’ goals in the spectacular 4-4 draw at White Hart Lane in 08/09. He has also taken points away from Liverpool, scoring a brace vs the Reds in a 2-2 draw in 10/11 and scoring the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win the season prior. The goals vs City and Chelsea were rather unimportant ones, however.
#2: Xabi Prieto – 9 goals vs Real Madrid
Xabi Prieto is here and considered for this lis probably only because of the 12/13 season, where he scored a combined 5 goals vs Los Blancos, including a Hattrick in a 4-3 loss on matchday 18 and 2 goals in a 3-3 draw on matchday 37.
#1: Raul Tamudo – 9 goals vs Barcelona, 6 vs Real Madrid, & 6 vs Atletico Madrid
Back in the 2000s, if you faced Espanyol, you had to score at least 2 goals because you knew Raul Tamudo was going to score. He dashed the hopes of FC Barcelona’s title run in 06/07 at the death on matchday 38, with an 89th minute goal losing Barca the 2 points at the Camp Nou and helping Real Madrid win the league. He was also key in wins for Barca’s city rivals 2 other times, including the reverse fixture in 06/07, getting a goal and an assist in a 3-1 win, and scoring both goals in a 2-0 win in 01/02. He hasn’t just been frustrating for the blaugrana, however, he scored one in 2-1 wins vs Real Madrid in both 01/02 and 07/08, and doing the exact same thing vs Atletico Madrid in 06/07 & 07/08. The giant killer.
I hope you liked this shorter post, it was very fun to research and make, and I hope you had as much fun reading it as I did making it. See you soon!
