World Cup Every Two years… What?
By Jim James
You heard it here first, and I can’t believe it. For those thinking that this isn’t big, it is. This is on par with when the Super League was announced last April. I’m watching Atleti-Liverpool as I write this, and a Grezmann red card? Ouch, now I see it on replay. Studs to head. Yeouch. Even when Griezmann has a good game, he has a bad one, lol. Anyway, back to the post. According to El Larguero, FIFA has told teams that there will be a new world cup with 2 years separation starting 2026. Also being covered is the Super League news.
World Cup every 2 Years
Relax. Calm Down everyone. This may not be as bad as everybody thinks. A biannual world cup may bring opportunity. First off, no more 10 month long final stages like this year. I mean, I love supporting the boys in red and white, but it’s 3 games a month. We want to see more. The end is at the end of March. I want to get to then, but that is wishing away Christmas and my birthday. Back on topic, that would condense and potentially de-complicate the process. It would also help to dissolve the Confederations Cup. All it is is a dress rehearsal for the real thing in a few months. It would also, as I said, bring opportunity. You must admit, 2018 feels like forever ago, and there is still over a year to go until Qatar 2022. It would also help capture players’ peaks. I can name at least 20 players who are bona fide into their nation’s squad now that weren’t in 2018.
However, I concede, there are a few questions. How will it affect the prestige of the biggest and most popular competition in not just Football, but in worldwide sports. A bigger question, in my opinion, anyway, how will players manage to fit the Euros/Copa America, World Cup, Olympics, and Nations League in a span of June to early October? Wow, penalty Liverpool. In a span of June 14 to, say, October 10, that is 114 days for 4 major international tournaments, exactly half of which intersect with club football. Liverpool scored. That means only 57 days of purely international football. Quadruple Substitution for Atletico Madrid? Wow. Those two questions remain, and that is the main reason of concern and dislike at this new idea, but I am not one of those people who hate everything new for no reason.
Ref going to the VAR screen. Possible pen for Atletico Madrid. One to the next news, the pesky Super League saga continues. No penalty. Right decision. A new format has been chosen for the super league, with 20 qualified clubs, no permanent members, a chance to qualify and a second division, also with 20 teams. The in-tournament format remains the same. They need now to update their site.
Anyway, that will do it for today’s post. Give a bi annual world cup a chance. Don’t immediately hate it. This is Jim James signing off.
