FC Barcelona: Endless Misery
By Jim James
I’m going to start out this post the way one Sophia Petrillo does. Picture it. Canada 2021. I’ve just come back from a day trip to a relative’s place (COVID-safely, of course), which didn’t end so well. What I need now is just a relaxing dinner, end of the day, to start fresh in the morning. I turn on my computer, go to twitter to see the happenings while I was gone, and what do I see? “Official: Lionel Messi to leave FC Barcelona”. Amazing. This is the start of the misery period for FC Barcelona fans. The period where any single bit of good news was overshadowed by bad news. Following Ansu Fati getting re-reinjured and being out until February, I’ve cracked. I just need to get this post up.
First: We signed Aguero. I was absolutely HYPED when we signed him. I know it was in June, but I want to cover this, and it’s my post not yours. However, he was out for 2 ½ months before he even played a league game for Barca, suffering an injury in the Joan Gamper trophy. Once he did get back in October, He was off to a slow start, with his first goal being a stoppage time consolation in El Clasico. That would turn out to be his only goal as an arrhythmia forced him to retire in December, after playing just 5 games for Barca.
Okay, off to a slow start, but some of our signing HAVE to be good, right? Just by accident or SOMETHING. Memphis Depay. Okay, 8 goals in all comps, but he’s offside so much. Eric Garcia. Occasionally gets a good play in, but is more error prone than Lorus Karius, I swear. Luuk de Jong. Picking up form, but will probably go back to the human white flag he was before January and has no chance of being loaned to Cadiz. Emerson. We sold him to Spurs literally TWO MONTHS after we got him from Betis. Finally, Yusuf Demir. He played a little but was ineffective and has since been sent back to Rapid Wien in Austria. Ferran and Dani Alves are looking promising but ZERO of our summer signings turned out. Good Grief.
We go to the La Liga season, and while we probably won’t win it, we have to finish in a Champions League spot comfortably, right? Well, we’re 6th. When Ansu Fati returned from a year long injury in late October, he almost immediately got re-injured and when he returned for the Supercopa, got re-reinjured in the Bilbao game today and is out until Mid-February. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Then there’s the Champions League. Don’t even get me started there. Consecutive 3-0 losses to Bayern and BENFICA, two 1-0 wins vs Dinamo Kyiv, a 0-0 draw vs Benfica and a 3-0 loss to Bayern. And we’re in the Europa. Yeah.
I could go on for ages, but I’ll end it here. Another shorter post, but I just want to get a small rant post done. I feel better getting it all out. Until next time.
