Liverpool’s Quiet Summer 2024

This summer transfer window so far has been relatively quiet, with no massive transfer sagas and no big-money moves having come from the month of July so far, however, most teams have at least made a signing or two, or are in advanced negotiations with new star additions. Having said that, a summer which promised to be full of changes after an era came to an end, has so far seen just one deal be completed between incomings and outgoings, and not a single pound spent or gained from the transfer market so far. What’s happening with Liverpool’s summer? Let’s see.

After manager Jurgen Klopp announced his departure back in late January, wholesale changes were expected at Anfield, in the playing and backroom staff. While many changes ended up happening in the backroom staff, with Arne Slot replacing Klopp and bringing in many new staff members. However, the changes in the playing staff haven’t been seen at all yet with the only deals being completed are players returning from loans and leaving on frees. The only deal that’s actually been negotiated and completed was Calvin Ramsay’s loan to Wigan. Why is that? Will Liverpool make signings this summer?

Of course Liverpool will eventually make signings this summer. It’s easy for Liverpool to see teams like Aston Villa and Chelsea spending big this summer and be jealous compared to FSG’s tight-fisted July, but the signings will eventually come. Liverpool are currently negotiating with Newcastle for former Everton star Anthony Gordon, a move which if completed would finally see Gordon become the most hated man in the blue side of Liverpool. They’re also being seriously linked to superstar forward Victor Osimhen, and need a holding midfielder, being linked to players such as Joey Veerman, Joao Gomes, and Alan Varela for help in that area.

Also, another good sign for Liverpool fans, is that Liverpool owners FSG are reportedly prepared to give Arne Slot a war chest to put his spin on the club. Also, Liverpool fans could also see the Mo Salah to Saudi Arabia saga re-ignited, which would likely see a massive cash injection into Liverpool. If said deal happens, you can expect pretty much anything from the reds for the rest of the window.

Despite all this however, the signs are still worrying, with Liverpool having missed half of the transfer window so far and having missed out on so many talents. Most clubs would have been able to complete a few deals by this point in the window, and it shows a lack of negotiating ability, in my eyes, that Liverpool have been unable to complete a single signing so far this season.

It’s still not the end of the world though, of course. At the end of a season, people don’t remember how long it took for you to make signings, just if they ended up well. This entire thing will be forgotten if Liverpool’s signings end up having a larger impact than those of their rivals, such as Man United’s Leny Yoro, Chelsea’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Man City’s Savio, Arsenal’s Riccardo Calafiori, and Tottenham’s Archie Gray. For now though, I’m Jim James, until next time.
