When Promotion is the worst thing that can happen to your club

Promotion is always something to celebrate. Your club has just got to the top division, and even better, will gain an influx of cash. It seems great, right? 75% of the time it is, but the 25% sometimes get a lack of money, have an inexperienced squad, or are just too conservative to spend. The result? Relegation, a low points tally, a mass exodus, and a stain on the resume of pretty much everyone at the club. Here are 3 times in the premier league that promotion hurted a club more than it helped it.

  1. Derby County 07-08

We all know about this one, let’s get it out of the way. After winning the playoff after finishing 20th in the championship in the previous season, as well as a change of ownership and staff meaning the club was lenient in signings, as well as the new manager coming into a depressed dressing room and being involved in a very naughty scandal, it’s like if the current Huddersfield team, with Ryan Schofield in goal, Yaya Sanogo up top, and Richard Keogh in Defence got promoted. It’s not pretty.

  1. Reading 12-13

Sure, they only finished 19th, but they got only 28 points, shielded by an awful QPR season. I honestly don’t know why they had this awful season, they spent well, they had 2 consecutive good finishes in the championship, but the squad couldn’t deliver.

  1. QPR 14-15

When you sell a prime Loic Remy to Chelsea as you’re getting promoted and DON’T REPLACE HIM or SIGN ANY ATTACKER AT ALL, you’re doomed. They had announced their presence as a yo-yo club by… signing a late 30s Rio Ferdinand. I know, name appeal, but he was simply past his prime at this stage. Last in the league, and has not got back since.

Thanks for reading, those were 3 stories that I hope you liked, and I will see you later!
